Pardon my posting lag. The Memorial Day weekend was delightfully exhausting, and I spent precious little time with the computer.
But commuting carries on, as does road construction.
Commenter Rob asked, “Anyone know what project is planned at or near Deerfield Rd. & Milwaukee. EXPECT DELAY flashing signs appeared on both roads last week. Unable to find any info about what to expect?”

The Chicago Tribune’s Jon Hilkevitch posted an update to his March story about the lack of safe, non-motorized ways for suburban children to get to school. According to the May 18 article, the U.S. government has already issued $8.3 million in funding to Illinois for the Safe Routes to School initiative, but the project has stalled. The article raises questions about the importance of transportation initiatives in Illinois.

Here’s what’s on tap for Lake County commuters this week: New lane configurations on the northernmost portion of the Tri-State Tollway, more capacity on Metra, and the countdown begins to the unofficial start of summer: Memorial Day.

Sometimes it can feel as if all of Lake County is one gridlocked, bottlenecked, backed-up road, but everything is relative. There are backups, and there are eye-rolling, engine-temperature-rising, steering-wheel-slapping brake sessions to set watches by. Year-round jam spots, not caused by temporary road construction, frequent enough to include in navigation directions: “Make a right on 83 to avoid the Route 60 traffic jam”.
